Sturla Holm Rägglid’s Emotional Medal Ceremony
Sturla Holm Rägglid from Norway earned a bronze medal in the men’s 20km biathlon on Tuesday, but the moment was marred by his heartfelt admission of infidelity during the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
In an interview with NRK, a Norwegian broadcaster, Rägglid became emotional as he revealed to his former girlfriend that he had cheated, describing it as “the worst week of my life.”
“I want to reach out to those who might not be tuning in,” the 28-year-old athlete shared. “Six months ago, I found the love of my life, the most wonderful person.” He paused, perhaps reflecting on his turmoil.
“Three months back, I made the biggest mistake of my life by cheating on her. Just last week, I told her the truth. This week has truly been the hardest,” he admitted.
“Winning this medal feels like a gold medal in life. I know that others might see it differently, but my focus is solely on her. Sports have taken a backseat lately. I really wish I could celebrate this victory with her.”
Rägglid, widely recognized as one of the top biathletes globally, chose not to disclose the identity of his ex-girlfriend.
His fellow countryman, Johan Olav Botton, secured the gold medal, while French athlete Eric Perrault took home silver.
“I’ve aimed to be a good role model, but I’ve made some foolish choices,” he reflected. “My home club sent me a motivating video that pushed me today.”
He continued, “It’s essential to acknowledge your mistakes, especially when they deeply affect someone you care about.”
Rägglid also mentioned that he has no plans to give up on the relationship after the infidelity, expressing, “I hope that through my actions, I can convey how much I truly love her. I readily accept the consequences and genuinely regret what happened.”
As a six-time world champion in biathlon and the victor of the 2024-2025 Biathlon World Cup, along with being the 2022 Olympic relay champion, Rägglid’s achievements in his sport are noteworthy.
