Barack Obama Presidential Center Faces Financial Trouble
Shortly after the Barack Obama Presidential Center opened in Chicago, Illinois, a subcontractor has ceased operations and laid off 25 union workers.
This center, funded entirely by $850 million in private donations, welcomed the public on June 19th. However, the owner of Adamson Plumbing Contractors, one of the subcontractors, has reported that financial challenges have forced the company to cancel six additional construction projects, pushing it toward bankruptcy.
Mike Owen, the owner, expressed that stopping operations was the only way to avoid total financial collapse. “Laying off nearly 30 people is something no business owner wants to do,” he remarked. “It’s a tough decision, especially when you believe the company can remain profitable. But the pressure was significant.”
Owen noted that the company incurred $3.9 million in losses due to the large-scale project before its opening. Additionally, Adamson Contractors had filed a $1.72 million mechanic’s lien against the property. A payment issue has now escalated into a legal dispute.
Reports indicate that Owen’s company is among several subcontractors, including minority-owned businesses, facing severe financial strain, disputes over unpaid invoices, and rising costs associated with constructing the center.
Owen spent months negotiating with Lakeside Alliance regarding delays, labor costs, and project changes, but discussions eventually broke down, leading him to take the situation public.
