On Tuesday, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney clarified that Rex Heuermann, the alleged Gilgo Beach serial killer, has not been offered any plea deal.
Heuermann, age 61, faces charges linked to the murders of seven sex workers, part of nearly a dozen dismembered bodies discovered along Long Island from 1993 to 2010.
“We have a serious case on our hands,” Tierney stated. “Let’s focus on that first, prepare for trial, and once everything is settled, we’ll reevaluate and resume the investigation.”
Addressing speculation about a potential plea agreement, he firmly responded, “No!”
He emphasized that there have been no concrete discussions about settling the case.
Heuermann was arrested in July 2023 outside his Manhattan construction office.
Initially, he was charged with the murders of three sex workers known locally as the “Gilgo Four,” whose cases had remained cold for over ten years.
Using DNA evidence, prosecutors later connected him to a total of seven victims: Valerie Mac, 24; Melissa Taylor, 20; Megan Waterman, 22; Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Maureen Braind Burns, 25; Sandra Costira, 28; and Amber Lynn Costello, 27—all sex workers from the New York metropolitan area.
While Tierney hasn’t dismissed potential links to other victims, he noted that the ongoing investigation into the seven known victims has slowed down due to strict state court disclosure laws.
The prosecution is required to share all evidence with the defense—a process designed to ensure fairness in court, referred to as “discovery.”
“We’ve had to halt some investigative efforts because we need to keep gathering new evidence while also fulfilling those discovery obligations,” he explained.
Referring to the ongoing nature of the investigation, he added, “We seem to be caught in this loop. To comply with legal requirements, we’ve actually paused certain actions.”
The Gilgo Beach case has drawn national attention and was featured in a recent three-part series on Peacock. The series includes an exclusive interview with Heuermann’s wife, Asa Elupp, and their daughter, Victoria Heuermann.
