Suggestions for Californians to cut fuel costs during rising prices

Californians are already grappling with some of the highest gas prices in the country, a situation exacerbated by the environmental policies of the California Democratic Party. Now, as tensions between the U.S. and Iran rise, many are feeling even more pressure at the pump.

As of Monday, the average gas price in California hit $5.52 per gallon, according to data from the American Automobile Association. Candice Redd, a spokeswoman for the organization, noted that prices have surged by 32 cents in just a week and 94 cents over the past month, which is quite significant.

The ongoing conflict with Iran is straining global oil supplies. Factors such as state refineries closing—partly due to strict climate regulations—are also influencing the market. Some estimates suggest that if more refineries shut down, prices could soar to over $8 a gallon. Redd mentioned that only nine refineries remain operational in the state after recent closures.

“With fewer refineries in operation, supply will definitely become tighter,” she commented.

Moreover, there’s the typical seasonal increase in demand around this time of year. California’s requirements for special gasoline blends, which are more costly to produce, coincide with more people hitting the roads as spring break approaches.

For Californians feeling the pinch, Redd offered a few practical tips.

Shop for Cheaper Prices

Drivers can use platforms like GasBuddy to find lower prices nearby. The AAA mobile app also features a price search tool. Generally, gas stations located near highways tend to charge more.

Take Advantage of Discounts

Fuel reward programs, such as Shell Fuel Rewards, can help drivers save a bit per gallon. Redd pointed out that some initial sign-up promotions may offer discounts of up to 30 cents per gallon on the first fill-up. Additionally, independent gas stations near grocery stores often have lower prices.

Use Your Car Wisely

Redd advised minimizing air conditioning usage when possible, as it can strain engine power. Instead of idling your car, turn it off when you’re done driving. Planning your trips ahead to cut mileage and avoid peak traffic hours can also help save fuel.

Use the Carpool Lane

Carpooling can be a smart way to conserve gas while utilizing high-occupancy vehicle lanes during busy times. These lanes not only save fuel but also help reduce pollution, as noted by the California Department of Transportation.

Do Car Maintenance

Keeping your vehicle in good condition, especially addressing any “check engine light” warnings, can enhance fuel efficiency. Making sure you use the right motor oil and maintaining proper tire pressure are also essential for optimal performance.
