Suni Lee Aims for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles
Suni Lee is taking another shot at the Olympics.
The six-time Olympic medalist shared on Tuesday that she’s resuming gymnastics training, setting her sights on the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. This announcement came in an Instagram video, released exactly two years before the event kicks off in Southern California.
“I know what I’m capable of,” Lee expressed in the video. “We’re going to do whatever it takes to get there.” The clip concluded with: “This is more than just a comeback.”
Lee, who celebrated her 23rd birthday in March, last competed during the 2024 Paris Olympics. There, she contributed to the U.S. team’s gold medal wins and also earned a bronze in the individual all-around, bringing her total Olympic medal count to six.
Her return to the sport is particularly significant considering the challenges she faced leading up to Paris.
In 2023, Lee stepped away from Auburn University’s gymnastics program following a diagnosis of kidney disease. Preparing for the Paris Olympics involved extensive treatment, medication adjustments, and a lot of uncertainty about her ability to train at a high level.
Eventually, she got the green light from doctors to compete alongside team members such as Simone Biles and Jade Carey on the gold-winning squad.
Now, Lee’s determined to see if she can make it back to the Olympics. “I know there’s more within me,” she mentioned in an interview. “I’m trying to give myself another chance to see what happens if I keep going.”
Her journey will also be documented in a film project by Fanatics Studio, which will provide a behind-the-scenes look at her efforts to qualify for her third Olympics.
Along with Lee, Carey will also be involved with the 2024 team as they dive back into elite competition. Biles’ participation in Los Angeles remains uncertain, while Chiles is still in the running for a spot.
The gymnastics events for the 2028 Olympics start on July 15, giving Lee a two-year window to refine her skills, assess her health, and secure a place on Team USA.
Having made an impressive comeback once before, she’s now on the pursuit of another – right in her hometown.
