Sunny Hostin Expresses Concerns Over American Flags

Sunny Hostin, who co-hosts The View on ABC, recently shared her feelings about American flags prominently displayed in communities. As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, she expressed a sense of unease in these environments.

“I think unfortunately in this country, people have different lived experiences. So while some may feel like… it is the best country in the world,” she stated during a recent episode.

Hostin went on to mention “Patriot Front,” labeling it as a “White nationalist organization established in 2017” that pushes for a strict, ultra-nationalist agenda aimed at forming a White ethno-state in the U.S.

In response to a recent march by around 400 members of this group in Washington, D.C., Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) has called for an investigation into their funding. The marchers wore khaki pants and navy shirts, concealed their faces, and carried Confederate and upside-down American flags.

“As a Black woman, I’m sitting there in my country, and that’s the type of fear I have to experience,” Hostin remarked.

She further remarked, “I walk into a community and see American flags everywhere, and I suddenly feel unsafe because a part of this country has co-opted the flag, tying it to White supremacy. That should never be the case, but they’ve weaponized it.”

Historically, inverted flags have been used by D.C. residents protesting former President Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops last September, and also during protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“It belongs to all of us,” co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin said about the American flag.

Hostin agreed, affirming, “It does belong to all of us.”

This discussion arose after guest host Michelle Buteau questioned the reasoning behind certain groups celebrating the 250-year anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

“When you say this is the best nation — the best nation for who?” she questioned.

“Yeah, the best nation for who?” Hostin echoed.

Buteau continued, “If we are celebrating 250 years — what are we actually celebrating?”
