Sununu calls Cuomo ‘complete jacka–,’ Newsom ‘just a prick’

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu (Republican) Hit former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (Democrat) and California Governor Gavin Newsom (Democrat) met on Thursday.

Speaking at the Reagan Institute Summit on Education (RISE) on Thursday, sponsored by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, Sununu said that while relations between state governors are generally cordial, in his eight years in office, “I’ve had two governors who really weren’t well-liked by anybody, maybe the second or third, but only two.” When asked who those governors were, Sununu responded, “I’m not sure who they were, but I’m not sure who they were.”

“Andrew Cuomo,” Sununu responded, “a total asshole, nobody likes him. And honestly, nobody cares about Gavin. Gavin’s just an asshole.”

Sununu said even Democrats dislike Newsom, “but they don’t say it out loud,” but he also noted his good relationships with Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek of Oregon and Gov. Phil Murphy of New Jersey.

“Tina and I don’t agree at all politically, but she’s a great person,” Sununu said. “I think she’s a really great person. I call her my favorite governor on the West Coast. You know Phil Murphy of New Jersey? Phil Murphy and I get along really well. He’s got a great sense of humor.”

Sununu, a frequent critic of former President Trump and an endorser of South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley before she dropped out of the Republican presidential primary, said in March that he would support the former president as the party’s nominee.

“I’m going to support the candidate. I’m going to support Donald Trump, but my focus is definitely on this state,” he said.

But Sununu did not back down from his criticism of Trump, including calling him a “loser” and criticizing his age.

“Certainly, I’m not going to back down from that,” Sununu said, “but again, this is an alternative. And I mean, the alternative is [President Biden.] And I think what people are seeing is a lack of control, a lack of understanding of immigration issues, a lack of fiscal responsibility.”

The Hill has reached out to Cuomo and Newsom.
