New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) said former President Trump's recent comments about deploying the National Guard and military on Election Day “should give everyone pause.”
President Trump suggested in an interview last week that he would use the National Guard and military to fight potential disruption from “the enemy from within,” including “radical left-wing lunatics.”
On Sunday, ABC News' Martha Raddatz confronted Sununu about his comments on “This Week.”
Raddatz said while New Hampshire's governor claimed “it's all hyperbole,” he also said “those things have real consequences.”
“Some people are being threatened.” [the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)] Regarding comments made by the President and J.D. Vance, etc. You still support Donald Trump, so does that stop you? ” she asked.
Sununu initially agreed: No one likes that kind of thing or hyperbole. ”
Then he retorted: “But let's see, he was president for four years. Did he go after his political opponents? Did he weaponize the Justice Department to go after Hillary Clinton?” And He concluded by saying, “Of course he didn't do that,” and described Trump as a “warrior.”
Sununu has historically been critical of former presidents, initially supporting former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, but has now endorsed Trump. He said in April that he supports Trump even though he believes the former president “contributed” to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.
