Super Bowl champion discusses the challenges of moving from college to the NFL

Steve Beuerlein on the Transition from College Football to the NFL

Super Bowl champion Steve Beuerlein shared insights about the less-discussed aspects of moving from college football to the NFL. At 61, Beuerlein emphasized that while players often anticipate the physical challenges, they might overlook the mental complexities involved.

“I think a lot of players expect the intensity of the game to increase,” Beuerlein remarked in a recent interview. “They know things go faster, that the players are stronger, and there are fewer mistakes. Yet, not every player grasps the sheer complexity at this level and the extensive preparation it requires week after week.”

He pointed out that players need to develop strong decision-making skills and good habits both on and off the field to deal with the demanding nature of the NFL.

“It’s a long season, longer than what college players are used to, but the pressure to perform consistently at a high level each week is significantly more intense at the NFL stage,” Beuerlein explained.

The legendary quarterback, who played for 14 years in the NFL, also noted that as players age, their bodies require different care and attention. This includes making smart life choices regarding diet, nutrition, and exercise.

Beuerlein’s career included stints with several teams, such as the Los Angeles Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, and Denver Broncos. He was a backup quarterback for the Cowboys during their Super Bowl win in 1992 and made the Pro Bowl with the Panthers in 1999. Over the course of 147 games, he completed 56.9% of his passes, accumulating 24,046 yards, 147 touchdowns, and 112 interceptions.
