Support grows for high school that suspended hundreds of students for anti-ICE protest: 'Adults are stepping up'

Virginia High School Suspends Hundreds Over Protest

At a high school in Virginia, more than 300 students participated in a walkout aimed at protesting the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This event garnered a mix of responses on social media, with many applauding the school’s action.

On February 13, students from Woodbridge High School left their classes as a show of support for a broader movement opposing ICE’s operations, particularly those initiated by the Trump administration.

Principal Heather Abney informed parents via letter that the district does not endorse the walkout. She emphasized that students who leave campus without permission would face disciplinary action under the standard conduct code. Ultimately, 303 students received three-day suspensions.

Reports indicated that some students chose to go to a nearby shopping center, while others returned home or back to campus. However, it was noted that the students who returned also caused disruptions.

According to WDVM-TV, the 303 suspended students represented roughly 11% of the school’s total enrollment. Administrators cautioned that any future protests could result in similar sanctions.

Many social media users praised the school for upholding rules in light of what they viewed as disorderly behavior.

A social media user exclaimed, “This is the best news I’ve heard all day!!!! Finally, we have a school district that understands and enforces the rules.”

Another user commented, “Schools need to consistently enforce rules. Leaving class without permission, even for a significant cause, disrupts learning.” Yet another remarked, “That’s good. They’re here to learn, not protest ICE’s work.”

Some voices argued that it’s important for adults to take charge, suggesting that students can protest outside of school hours.

As the situation unfolded, a few individuals questioned whether suspension was an effective way to address students leaving school. Meanwhile, the Prince William County Police Department managed traffic for the protest and ensured student safety.

Interestingly, during the Trump administration, a significant number of individuals living in the U.S. illegally were reported to have departed the country voluntarily, raising questions about immigration policies and practices.
