Supporters Rally for Zohran Mamdani Amid Trump Criticism
Following Zohran Mamdani’s surprising win earlier this summer, the Democratic mayoral candidate for New York City has faced criticism from President Donald Trump, who labeled him as “communist.” However, those backing Mamdani, at a recent campaign launch in Prospect Park, argue that his victory is about much more than just a label.
“It’s not communism that won the primary in New York City,” said Nina, a door-to-door campaigner sporting a “Zohran Educator” t-shirt. “It’s his commitment to making New York more affordable that resonated with voters.” To her, that’s what truly matters.
Mamdani identifies as a democratic socialist and has garnered support from prominent figures like Senator Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. After his victory in June, Trump referred to him as a “100% communist madman.”
Perry, another supporter, took a different angle on Trump’s nickname, urging others to think critically about those who label Mamdani as a socialist or communist.
When asked if such terms bothered them, teachers Bridget and Perry shook their heads. “It’s really not about ideology,” Nicholas, a volunteer at the launch, emphasized. “We don’t want to demonize those terms. Most Americans aren’t even clear on what they really mean.” He added that the Mamdani campaign is far more extensive than just labels.
Many of the supporters at the event were educators. Bridget expressed her desire for a mayor who will prioritize her students’ needs, noting that she feels Mamdani would actively challenge the Trump administration on important issues.
Mamdani just wrapped up his “Five Boroughs Against Trump” tour, where he highlighted how Trump’s policies are impacting daily life for New Yorkers—especially regarding immigration and the economy.
“I work with students from immigrant backgrounds who are fearful for their safety,” Nicholas shared. “I have kids worried that ICE agents will come to their school.” He stressed the importance of having a candidate like Mamdani who stands up for the immigrant community against the actions of Trump and his allies.
Perry mentioned his support for Mamdani, particularly due to his ambitious vision for housing in the city. “Let’s grow big again,” he said, appreciating Mamdani’s positivity and openness.
Mamdani has pledged to freeze rents if elected in November, criticizing current Mayor Eric Adams for appointing officials who he claims are pushing for rent increases in stabilized apartments. Former mayor Bill de Blasio had previously been in favor of freezing rents during his term.
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, in contrasting views, criticized Mamdani’s proposal, suggesting that such a socialist plan would harm property owners unable to maintain their buildings.
Nina pointed out that Mamdani’s campaign is addressing the affordable housing crisis in New York City, impacting residents from all walks of life. “As an educator, I want to stay rooted in New York where I grew up,” she said, expressing optimism under Mamdani’s leadership.
