Criticism and Responses Following Charlie Kirk’s Assassination
In the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, some Israeli commentators have tried to create a divide between conservative activists and Israel, making exaggerated and unfounded claims about his recent statements.
Shortly after Kirk’s death, even before the suspect was identified, social media was rife with recklessness. The Prevention League’s Extremism Center reported thousands of posts filled with baseless accusations.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seems aware of this situation. He has praised Kirk as a defender of “truth and freedom.”
Washington’s Israeli ambassador, Mike Huckabee, addressed the misinformation on X, expressing his frustration at those seeking to monetize Kirk’s death with falsehoods. He urged those in power to clarify the truth.
Rabbi Pesach Warrickey, who spoke with Kirk shortly before his assassination, noted that while Kirk had expressed criticism of certain Israeli policies, his commitment to supporting Israel was strong. Warrickey explained that Kirk had initiated discussions with him in anticipation of questions during an upcoming campus tour.
Just last month, Kirk faced criticism for being “too supportive” of Israel. Warrickey pointed out that while they didn’t delve into the origins of Kirk’s views, his evangelical Christian beliefs likely played a role.
“Kirk often stated his belief that the land of Israel rightfully belongs to the Jewish people and supported Israel’s defense against Hamas,” Warrickey added. “He wasn’t gentle with our adversaries and he stood by Israel, even when critical.”
A video from a May discussion in Cambridge, which attracted attention online, featured Kirk staunchly defending Israel’s actions. He stated, “When Israel is at war, we expect repercussions. Hamas chose to invade Israel on Shabbat and take hostages.”
He went on to discuss the harsh realities of war, acknowledging the unfortunate loss of civilian lives while emphasizing that Hamas’s leadership bore the responsibility for the conflict, not the Israeli government.
Kirk had recently appeared on Megyn Kelly’s podcast, asserting his “bulletproof resume” of defending Israel on university campuses and social media. He expressed profound personal connections to Israel, guided by a belief in its biblical significance.
He consistently asserted that he felt more empowered to comment on Israeli affairs than many actual Israelis. Kirk stated, “I want to win for civilization and the West, not just counter those who threaten Jerusalem.”
David Joseph, a chief rabbi in Israel, extended his condolences to Kirk’s family, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a “voice of truth.”
In a show of unity, dozens of Christians and Jews gathered in Jerusalem to honor Kirk. They prayed for peace for his family and strength amidst their grief.
