Former federal judge J. Michael Luttig said Sunday on MSNBC’s “Belshi” that the Supreme Court should balk at former President Donald Trump’s immunity claims because they are an “existential threat to American democracy.” He said there was.
“With Rome all but burning down, the Supreme Court is now trivializing the existential threat to American democracy and the rule of law that this country faces,” Ruttig said. and the rule of law are the heart and soul of a nation. It is democracy and the rule of law that have made America a beacon of freedom to the rest of the world for nearly 250 years. Trump’s efforts certainly undermined American democracy and the rule of law. His efforts to overturn the election disqualified him from office under the Fourteenth Amendment and were crimes against the United States. But three and a half years later, the former president remains unapologetic and defiant.
He added, “He has absolute immunity from prosecution for his crimes, as you stated this week to a receptive Supreme Court, and in fact, every president commits crimes while in the Oval Office.” He insisted that he and all future presidents be free to faithfully enforce the law without fear of being held accountable for crimes committed while in office. This is to make it happen. It’s an absurd argument being made before the Supreme Court, and it’s a disgrace to the Constitution and our country. ”
