TikTok Mom Dies Following Tummy Tuck Surgery

A plastic surgeon who conducted a tummy tuck on a mom known from TikTok is grappling with the tragic outcome of her surgery, which occurred before she suffered a fatal brain injury.

Dr. Shahryar Talk, a plastic surgeon certified in two specialties in Cincinnati, stated that Rachel Tussey’s surgery on February 25 was entirely successful and had no complications. When he last interacted with her during recovery, he noted that she was awake and seemingly in good spirits.

“I’m heartbroken for Rachel and her family. My thoughts are with them in this incredibly sad time,” Dr. Talk expressed in a recent statement. “Like them, I can’t comprehend how this happened.”

Tussey, a 47-year-old mother of three, had shared her experience leading up to the surgery with her TikTok followers, numbering over 27,000. In her last video, shot just hours before the procedure, she appeared optimistic, stating, “I’m fine. I know God is protecting me. Let’s do it,” adding tags like #midlifeglowup and #mommymakeover.

However, the situation took a turn for the worse post-surgery. Her husband, Jeremy, later recounted how he was waiting in the recovery area when he received a call to return to her room around 5:45 p.m. He had a brief discussion with the surgeon, who assured him everything had gone well.

Shortly after, Jeremy noticed a change in his wife’s demeanor. “The next thing I knew, her face changed color,” he remembered. Initially attributing it to the effects of surgery, he soon realized something was gravely wrong.

When Rachel became unresponsive, medical staff initiated CPR and rushed her to TriHealth Bethesda North Hospital, where she was placed on life support. Jeremy learned from doctors that she had gone without oxygen for over six minutes, resulting in severe brain damage. Eventually, after the life support was removed, Rachel moved to hospice care, where she later passed away.

Bernard Lane III, an attorney representing the family, indicated that Tussey sustained permanent brain damage as a result of the surgery at a private facility. He noted, “At this point, we won’t be discussing liability or responsibility, as our main focus is on supporting the grieving family.”

Meanwhile, Jeremy is intent on uncovering what went wrong. “This feels incompetent to me. Someone dropped the ball here,” he stated simply. Rachel leaves behind her husband and their three children, Tristan, Alec, and Livi.
