Surprise team slides into automatic bye territory in latest College Football Playoff rankings

Eleven of the 12 teams in last week's College Football Playoff rankings are still safe.

However, the loss of the conference leader completely changed the situation in the bracket.

In case you still need a refresher, five automatic bids are awarded to conference winners, and the top four seeds are awarded to conference leaders in CFP ranking order (with byes).

The remaining seven bids will be awarded to general teams based on their placement in the rankings. Due to the bracket system, a team's playoff seeding may not be the same as the committee's ranking.

The current playoff seeds are:

automatic bidding

1. Oregon State — Big Ten leader (11-0, 8-0)

2. Texas — SEC leader (8-1, 4-1). Ranked 3rd place

3. Miami — ACC leaders (9-1, 5-1). Ranked 8th

4. Boise State — Mountain West leader (9-1, 6-0). 12th place

12. BYU — Big 12 leader (9-1, 6-1). 14th place

Led by Heisman candidate Ashton Giunty's 1,893 rushing yards, the Boise State Broncos are currently the No. 4 seed in the CFP poll, ahead of Big 12 leader BYU (No. 14). However, despite not being ranked in the top 12, BYU still leads the conference and has a playoff berth.

large scale bidding

5. Ohio State (9-1, 6-1); ranked No. 2

6. Penn State (9-1, 6-1) Ranked No. 4

7. Indiana (10-0, 7-0) Ranked No. 5

8. Notre Dame (9-1). Ranked 6th

9. Alabama (8-2, 4-2); ranked No. 7

10. Ole Miss (8-2, 4-2). Ranked 9th

11. Georgia (8-2, 6-2); 10th place

This means Tennessee, despite being the No. 11 team in the nation, is on the outside looking in, along with SMU, which is No. 13.

Colorado State is ranked No. 16 in the nation, but its destiny to make the College Football Playoff is in its own hands. Almost everyone else needs a lot of help.

If Colorado State wins against Kansas State and BYU loses to No. 21 Arizona State, the Buffaloes will take the lead over the Big 12 and move into automatic bidding. It's up to the committee to designate the Buffaloes as the No. 4 seed, but they must win the Big 12 title game to secure that spot.

Oregon State is the top seed in all three playoff projections. They are the only team in the country whose playoff seeding matches the CFP ranking.

If Miami loses to Wake Forest and SMU wins against Virginia, the Canes will almost certainly get an automatic bye for the time being, but they could be taken out of the standings altogether.

Oregon State is off this week, so even if the undefeated Hoosiers beat the Buckeyes in Columbus, they will remain the No. 1 seed.
