The woman found herself floating dead in the East River on Sunday morning – a little further from the bloody Mercedes – now appears to have taken her own life, a law enforcement source said Monday.
The woman, believed to be in her 40s or 50s, was found in the water near Fort Totten on Cross Island Boulevard and Totten Road around 11:15am, officers said.
The white Mercedes E-Class with a New York plate was parked about 50 yards away. There is a knife in the passenger seat, blood is smeared on the rear driver's door and the white leather interior.
Investigators now believe that a woman whose family notice has not been officially identified while she is pending, has been killed by suicide.
It is unknown if she was with anyone else at the time of her death.
A pedestrian called 911 after finding his body floating along a rocky coastline near the popular jogging path that passes through the heart of Little Bay Park near Srogsneck Bridge.
Locals were shocked by the ominous scenes of popular, but generally safe community destinations.
“This is terrible. Is there a corpse next to a car with blood in the jogging pass and the door?” Max, 48, from nearby Whitestone, told the Post Sunday. “My daughter asked me if they were filming the film.
“That doesn't make sense. This is the busiest place anywhere, especially on Sundays. Everyone comes here to ride their bikes and go for a walk with the rollerblades, dogs.”
“This is insane,” he added.
