Surrogate Mother Gives Birth Against Parents’ Wishes
A surrogate mother, McKenna West, recently performed a complex act of defiance by giving birth to a baby despite the wishes of the intended parents. This situation unfolded in Texas, after West fled there when her unborn child was diagnosed with a serious heart condition known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome, about 20 weeks into her pregnancy.
According to a statement from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office, after the diagnosis, the birth parents requested that West terminate the pregnancy. However, instead, she chose to seek refuge in Texas, prompting Paxton to intervene. He officially informed local medical facilities of their obligation to provide essential medical care to the newborn immediately after birth.
Paxton expressed his satisfaction with the court’s decision, stating that it was crucial to protect the baby’s life and ensure proper medical treatment. He emphasized the commitment of his office to advocate for the welfare of the child, stressing that every child deserves protection and care.
Upon her arrival in Texas, West gave birth to the child, named Gabriel, on Wednesday. Following his birth, Gabriel was transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit, where doctors could promptly conduct life-saving surgery.
Reportedly, the procedure has a high success rate at the hospitals in question, which gives a glimmer of hope. As Paxton noted, denying Gabriel medically necessary care would not be tolerated, reinforcing his office’s promise to use every available resource to safeguard innocent lives.
