A Montana couple is taking significant steps towards self-sufficiency amidst increasing global uncertainty.
Carrie and Colton Smith began their preparations early in 2023, both in their mid-30s. The sight of Chinese surveillance balloons in U.S. airspace raised alarm before they were shot down, prompting national concern.
This situation served as a “wake-up call” for the couple, motivating them to take control of their own survival plans.
“Growing up in California, my family was always ready for earthquakes, but this balloon incident pushed us to a whole new level,” Carrie noted.
“I realized I had to take action myself.” Since then, the Smiths have gathered an extensive assortment of supplies. This includes four generators, water storage drums, long-lasting freeze-dried food, and various forms of protection like firearms and tasers.
They have also made investments in solar panels, satellite phones, and solar-powered radios, along with life rafts.
According to Smith, with their current supplies, they feel prepared to survive for a year.
“I think every housewife should think about this,” she mentioned. “It’s just part of caring for your family.”
She emphasizes that preparation isn’t solely about cataclysmic events.
“It’s not just about facing the end of the world or a major war. It could just as easily be losing a job, natural disasters, you name it,” she said.
The couple has also created detailed plans for their family, including their dog Sky, and have prepared “bugout bags” for emergencies.
They’ve thoughtfully distributed their supplies across various locations—homes, vehicles, even friends’ places—to form a supportive network for tough times.
Their preparations cover five essential areas: food, water, shelter, self-defense, and communication.
While some might see their lifestyle as radical, Smith asserts it’s simply responsible.
“Preparation can be costly and isn’t something you can achieve overnight. But, it’s like investing in insurance,” she remarked.
“It’s about being confident in what you have on hand. It’s not extreme; it’s practical.” Carrie pointed out that securing food, water, shelter, and electricity comes first, followed by self-defense and communication gear.
