Suspect admits to getting into ‘dispute’ with roommate over where the remote control is before fatally shooting him: cops

A Maryland man has been arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting his roommate during an argument over a remote control, police said.

Richard Benaud, 38, of Springdale, was charged last week with manslaughter in connection with the death of Domonique Scott Hayes, 27.

Prince George's County Police announced on Instagram Friday that officers responded Thursday around 12:30 p.m.

“Officers discovered a deceased person suffering from gunshot wounds inside the home,” a police statement said. “He was pronounced dead at the scene.”

“Preliminary investigation revealed that Benaud shot and killed the decedent during an argument,” authorities added.

Benaud called police between 5:30 a.m. and 6 a.m. about six hours after the shooting, according to documents obtained by FOX 5 DC.

The documents state that his roommate told him that he “attacked me with a knife.”

Benaud told police she fell asleep on the couch and was woken up by Scott Hayes “making a fuss” in the kitchen.

Suspect Scott Hayes then repeatedly asked Benaud where the remote control was, but the suspect ignored him.

Benaud had a blanket over his head and when he removed it, he saw Scott Hayes holding two knives, police said.

The suspect then grabbed a handgun, began firing, and ran to his room on the third floor.

The suspect claims that because he did not see Scott Hayes injured, he believed the bullet did not hit him and went back to sleep.
