Suspect Brian Cole confesses to placing pipe bombs outside the RNC and DNC in D.C.

Confession in Pipe Bomb Case Related to January 6 Protests

A 30-year-old man from Virginia, Brian Cole Jr., was arrested on Wednesday and confessed on Thursday to placing two pipe bombs outside the Democratic and Republican National Committee headquarters just before the January 6, 2021, protests at the U.S. Capitol, according to law enforcement. Cole, who lives in Woodbridge, admitted during FBI questioning that he set the devices on January 5, 2021.

During his initial court appearance on Friday, he did not enter a plea and was ordered to stay in jail by Federal Judge Mokshila Upadhyaya. Cole is set to return to court for a detention hearing on December 15.

This confession is a significant development in a case that has perplexed investigators for almost five years, even despite a $500,000 reward and numerous leads. Surveillance video released by the FBI shortly after the attack captured a masked individual, dressed in a gray hoodie and Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes, placing a backpack with one bomb next to a bench near the DNC headquarters around 7:40 p.m. That same night, the suspect allegedly concealed a second bomb in the bushes outside the RNC building around 8:02 p.m.

The homemade bomb, constructed from threaded steel pipe, black powder, a kitchen timer, and a hobby fuse, went undetected until the afternoon of January 6, after demonstrators had begun gathering at the Capitol.

According to sources, the recent efforts by the Justice Department during the Trump administration, including those led by FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, played a crucial role in cracking the case. Analysts revisiting archived financial records found evidence linking purchases of bomb-making materials directly to Cole’s credit cards and bank accounts at various retailers in Virginia and Maryland.

“This is what it’s like to work for a president who tells you to go get bad guys and stop focusing on other frivolous things that have nothing to do with law enforcement,” Bongino remarked at a Thursday afternoon press conference announcing the arrests.

Further support came from cell phone location data and license plate readers, which confirmed that Cole’s phone and vehicle were in close proximity to both party headquarters on the night of the incident.

In the aftermath of the arrest, Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin stated that this serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by political violence to democracy. Meanwhile, Republican National Committee Co-Chair Lara Trump expressed gratitude towards law enforcement and mentioned that this outcome closes a troubling chapter.
