Rahmanullah Rakanwar, a 29-year-old Afghan national, has been named as the suspect in the shooting of two National Guardsmen in Washington, D.C.

Law enforcement officials have confirmed to CBS News that Rakanwar carried out the shooting using a handgun.

He entered the United States in 2021, reportedly linked to the events surrounding President Joe Biden’s withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.

Additionally, it was reported that Rakanwar’s permit to remain in the U.S. expired last September, meaning he has been in the country illegally since then.

According to various federal law enforcement sources, Rakanwar was part of the Biden administration’s Welcome Allies initiative following the U.S. exit from Afghanistan, having arrived in the country on September 8, 2021.

I’ve heard that his U.S. residency permit expired recently, and he is now undocumented. I have his name and birthdate but am waiting on more verification.

As previously highlighted, the shooting occurred in Washington, D.C., resulting in the lockdown of the White House.
