A New York City man on parole accused of dumping a young woman’s body in a trash heap in the street was assaulted by dozens of angry neighbors during his arrest on Monday.

The NYPD confirmed Tuesday morning that Chad Irish, 55, had been charged with concealing a body after being questioned by detectives about the death of Yazmin Williams, 31. Irish was also charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and criminal intimidation, but police said those charges are unrelated to Williams’ death.

Williams’ body was discovered around 5 p.m. Friday in a sleeping bag on a dolly and surrounded by black garbage bags in front of a building on East 27th Street. The New York City Medical Examiner’s Office said Williams died from a gunshot wound to the head. The dolly was tied to the railing of the scaffolding with red string.

He was taken to hospital in stable condition. The investigation remains ongoing and Irish has not been charged with Williams’ murder.

Police and paramedics tried to hold back the crowd, some of whom punched Mr Eilish, some of whom begged the crowd to kill him and others tried to strip him of his clothes. Mr Eilish could be heard pleading his innocence before being placed in an ambulance.

Police have listed two addresses for Eilish: one in the Bronx and one at the Nathan Strauss Houses, a New York City Housing Authority development on East 28th Street, not far from where Williams’ body was found.
