Suspect Identified in Fatal Attack on Pennsylvania Police Executing Warrant

Shooting Incident in York County, Pennsylvania

Authorities have identified the individual suspected of being responsible for the shooting that resulted in the deaths of three officers in rural York County, Pennsylvania, as Matthew James Ruth.

According to unnamed law enforcement sources, the 24-year-old Ruth was named as the shooter after an investigation linked to domestic issues began on Tuesday. Two state law enforcement officers confirmed his status as a suspect.

Officers from the Northern York County Regional Police and the Sheriff’s Office approached the home of Ruth’s ex-girlfriend with a warrant for his arrest. Reports indicate he was seen near the residence, where the woman lived with her mother. The mother, according to an affidavit, provided police with a photo of Ruth.

The image reportedly showed him with an AR-15 rifle resting on his chest. Officers spent several hours searching for him on Tuesday.

However, reports reveal that when officers arrived around 2 PM on Wednesday, Ruth was lying in a nearby cornfield dressed in camouflage and began firing at them.

In the attack, three officers lost their lives, and two others were critically injured before one of the wounded officers managed to return fire and hit the shooter.

Local resident David Miller described the scene, stating, “It sounded like a war zone,” noting he could see one of the bodies on the road. Neighbors reported hearing at least 30 gunshots.

Despite the tragedy, Governor Josh Shapiro reflected on the bravery of law enforcement during a visit to the area, sharing how proud families were of their loved ones who serve in the police. He expressed condolences for the victims and their families, urging them to stay strong.

Court records show Ruth faced previous allegations of stalking, criminal trespassing, and wandering at night.

Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher L. Paris mentioned in a press conference that details concerning the shooter were withheld as investigations are ongoing. He confirmed the injured officers remained in stable but serious condition.

Governor Shapiro emphasized the dedication of the officers, stating that they put their lives on the line to serve their communities. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondy addressed the violence against law enforcement, describing it as an unacceptable tragedy in society.

Community members have begun to gather, mourning what has been one of the deadliest days in Pennsylvania State Police history.
