DHS Intensifies Investigation into Minnesota Fraud Case Following Viral Video
Authorities have announced that a woman linked to a significant fraud case in Minnesota’s “Feeding Our Future” scheme has been charged in a daycare fraud scheme, spurred by a viral video from independent journalist Nick Shirley.
The woman, identified as Fahima Ege Mahmoud, allegedly misappropriated millions intended for children’s meals. She was indicted on Wednesday on charges for wire fraud and conspiracy to defraud the United States, according to court documents.
Minnesota officials and daycare leaders have refuted the allegations raised by the viral video, which suggested fraudulent activities at the daycare.
Earlier this year, Mahmoud was implicated in a broader $250 million “Feeding Our Future” case. Prosecutors claim she misrepresented her daycare, Future Leaders Early Learning in Minneapolis, as providing thousands of meals while enrolled in a federal child nutrition program.
In addition to these charges, Mahmoud is now facing accusations in connection with the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP), which aids low-income families with childcare. Between October 2022 and December 2025, she allegedly filed over 13,000 fraudulent claims totaling around $4.6 million. Prosecutors argue these claims were falsified, as she did not collect the necessary co-pays from families.
Shirley’s viral video showcased the Future Leaders Early Learning Center and included visits to seemingly abandoned daycare centers operated by the Somali community in Minneapolis, hinting at widespread fraud.
This video prompted a swift and comprehensive response from various agencies under the Trump administration. Following its release, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services took action by freezing around $185 million in federal childcare funding for Minnesota.
Moreover, more than 2,000 federal agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) were deployed to the Twin Cities to bolster investigation and enforcement efforts.
