Investigation Ongoing After Shooting of Activist Charlie Kirk
The search continues for the individual suspected of shooting and killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk, as investigators are currently reviewing security footage that has captured a “woman in all dark clothes.” This incident occurred on Wednesday at approximately 12:20 PM while Kirk was speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem.
The only available details about the shooter have been obtained from the campus’s closed-circuit television, according to a spokesperson from the Utah Public Safety Department. Although they are analyzing the footage, the spokesperson expressed some uncertainty regarding its clarity, noting that the suspect was dressed in dark clothing. “There’s no other explanation,” he added.
The tragedy unfolds as Kirk was taken to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The Utah Department of Public Safety stated, “This shooting remains an active investigation.” They are collaborating with the FBI, the Utah County Attorney’s Office, and local law enforcement agencies in their efforts.
“The state crime lab is working alongside all involved law enforcement to navigate multiple active crime scenes,” the statement explained, identifying these areas based on where Kirk was shot and where both the suspect and the victim moved. Authorities have suggested that this was a targeted attack, with indications that the shooter fired from the roof of a building towards the public event in the campus courtyard. For now, additional details are limited to maintain the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
In light of the shooting, a number of individuals initially identified as suspects were released after being questioned by authorities, as no connections were established with the shooting. As it stands, the FBI is urging anyone with information, photos, or videos from the incident to come forward.
The Public Safety Department mentioned that security measures were in place, with six officers assigned to secure the event, alongside other protection arrangements for Kirk. The event was attended by around 3,000 people in the University Quad, which serves as a venue for outdoor events. This unfortunate incident marks a significant moment for both Utah and the wider community.
