Throughout 2023, left-wing demonstrators flocked to Israeli streets to protest reforms that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition said were needed to balance the power of left-wing activists' courts. Some demonstrators, like many 18-year-olds in Israel, vowed never to join the reserves or even be drafted into the army.
Protests continued until October 7, when Hamas terrorists invaded the country. Critics of the protests say they are endangering national security by fomenting discord and refusal to serve in the military.
Some anti-Netanyahu protests have realigned with the movement to free Israeli hostages, but the main obstacle is Hamas, not the Israeli government.
