Hit-and-Run Incident Claims Life of University of Kansas Student

A man with a criminal background is accused of causing the death of a University of Kansas student during a hit-and-run incident. According to court documents, the victim, 20-year-old Elsa McGrane, was jogging in Lawrence, Kansas, when she was struck by a white pickup truck. The police later identified the driver as 36-year-old William Ray Klingler.

The collision occurred near the Lawrence Regional Airport around 6 p.m., but McGrane’s body was only found hours later, when a passerby alerted emergency services at 3:35 a.m. She was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Klingler was arrested a few days later after authorities received tips from the community.

McGrane was a pre-medicine student aiming to graduate in 2026, as noted by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Court records indicate Klingler has faced previous charges, including two DUI offenses, and had attempted to tamper with an ignition interlock device, a breathalyzer that certain drivers are required to use. His juvenile record from 2003 includes serious charges such as robbery and theft, resulting in intensive supervision probation.

The sheriff’s office extended their condolences, stating, “Our hearts go out to Elsa’s family and friends in this incredibly tragic situation.”

Elsa was active in her sorority, Chi Omega, which posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, describing her as someone who illuminated the lives of others. The sorority highlighted her qualities of kindness and loyalty, emphasizing that she had a natural gift for making people feel valued.

The Chi Omega chapter expressed their sorrow, stating, “Our hearts go out to Elsa’s friends, family, and all those touched by her light. Her faith, kindness, and sisterhood will forever remain in our hearts.”

Klingler has not been officially charged yet but remains in custody under suspicion of manslaughter.
