Recently released body camera footage shows a woman accused of carjacking driving toward Maryland police officers, hitting one officer and several vehicles before the officers fired shots as she tried to escape.
On May 7, around 9 p.m., police in Anne Arundel County were called to a hit-and-run incident at North Crain Highway and 11th Avenue in Glen Burnie. Upon arrival, they discovered that a woman had crashed into another car before taking a family member’s vehicle that had come to assist her.
The individual, identified as 28-year-old Jasmin L. Cooper, was found a short time later in the vehicle on the 8500 block of Severn.
In the footage, officers can be heard instructing Cooper to “turn the car off” and “get out of the car.” Although she did briefly raise her hands off the steering wheel, she remained inside the vehicle.
“So what, she stole her son’s car?” one officer remarked during the incident.
Shortly thereafter, Cooper exited the parking lot at a high speed, forcing the officers to leap out of the way.
According to police accounts, she drove directly at officers, colliding with one officer, two patrol cars, and another vehicle, which prompted the officers to fire their weapons, hitting her in the process.
Other officers responding to the situation saw Cooper turning onto Reece Road, where she struck another vehicle and then attempted to enter an occupied car before the police apprehended her.
The footage captured Cooper lying on the ground in handcuffs, while officers were seen providing first aid for her gunshot wound afterward.
Cooper now faces charges that include carjacking, attempted carjacking, multiple counts of reckless endangerment, and first- and second-degree assault, among related offenses.
Both she and the officer who was struck sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were treated accordingly.
