Virginia State Police apprehended a 19-year-old named Camron Harris on Saturday for his involvement in a shooting at Virginia State University. Authorities confirmed that Harris, a resident of Henrico, Virginia, is not a student at the institution. The incident resulted in five injuries, with one individual in critical condition.
Though the identities of the victims have not been disclosed, officials indicated that only one of them is affiliated with the university. Following the shooting, which occurred early Saturday morning, police launched an extensive search and eventually located Harris hiding in a closet of a dormitory.
Harris faces felony charges including four counts of felonious assault and four counts related to the use of a firearm. He is currently held without bail at the Chesterfield County Jail, and authorities suggest that more charges could follow.
The shooting took place at around 1:28 a.m., and the police found the injured individuals just outside the residence hall. In a statement, the university recognized the seriousness of the situation, expressing concerns for students, parents, alumni, and the surrounding community. They also noted that VSU Police would be increasing their presence on campus amid the ongoing investigation.
Students have been advised to keep an eye on their VSU emails for updates on safety measures and support resources. As the situation stands, the lockdown of the campus has been lifted.
Virginia State University, located in Ettrick, Virginia, is a historically black institution, roughly 40 miles south of Richmond.
