Idaho Sniper Identified in Firefighter Attack
The individual believed to be responsible for the shooting that killed two firefighters and injured another in Idaho has been named as Wes Lowry. Authorities revealed that he intentionally started a fire in Canfield Mountain, near Coeur d’Alene, and drew in first responders into a trap.
On Sunday, June 29, 2025, the Cootenai County Sheriff’s Office received reports of gunfire as firefighters responded to the blaze. Audio recordings indicated a state of emergency—one firefighter urgently requested law enforcement, noting the presence of two battalion chiefs who were unresponsive due to multiple gunshot wounds.
The dispatcher received distressing details, including, “We have another Coeur d’Alene firefighter… I’m stuck,” underscoring the chaotic scene. The urgency was palpable as they indicated the fire was purposefully set to lure them in.
Law enforcement initiated a widespread manhunt for the suspect based on cell phone tracking. A few hours later, they discovered Lowry’s body in nearby woods, alongside a firearm. The circumstances surrounding his death—whether a suicide or a result of confrontation—remain unclear.
Details regarding the two fallen firefighters have yet to be released, pending notifications to their families. Meanwhile, the surviving firefighter has undergone emergency surgery and is currently stable.
Idaho Governor Brad Little condemned the attack, calling it a “sincere direct attack on our brave firefighters” and assured that the state would support the investigation fully. “They answered calls to protect others and paid the ultimate price,” he stated.
The motives behind Lowry’s actions are still under investigation, with federal agencies such as the FBI now involved in supporting local authorities
