Suspect named in Kentucky State University shooting that resulted in one student death and another injury

The individual accused of fatally shooting two students at Kentucky State University has been named as Jacob Lee Byrd, a 48-year-old man from Evansville, Indiana, who does not attend the school.

Frankfort Police reported that Byrd has been apprehended on charges of murder and first-degree assault related to the shooting incident. Evansville is situated roughly 240 miles to the west of Frankfort.

It’s notable that Byrd is not associated with the university, and so far, authorities haven’t disclosed any information regarding his potential motives.

Police officers responded swiftly to reports of a shooting near Whitney M. Young Jr. Hall around 3:10 p.m. By the time they reached the campus, the Kentucky State University Police had already taken the suspect into custody.

Footage from the scene showcased a heavy police presence and crime scene tape around the dormitory area.

Both of the shooting victims were students. Tragically, one has died after being transported to the hospital, while the other remains in critical condition.

The university hasn’t yet revealed the identities of the victims.

In a statement, the school mentioned, “We are in close contact with the family and providing all possible support,” and highlighted the availability of counseling and support services.

Governor Andy Beshear shared a message via X, indicating that the shooting seems to be an isolated event and reassured that there is “no ongoing threat.”

“Violence has no place in our commonwealth or country. Let’s pray for the families and KSU students affected, and for a world where this never happens,” he added.

President Kofi C. Akakpo referred to the incident as a “senseless tragedy.” During a news conference, he expressed his deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “As a parent, I can’t imagine receiving the phone call I made today.”

The university has decided to cancel classes, final exams, and all campus activities for the rest of the week, just as the fall semester was set to conclude on Friday.

The school also mentioned that “Students can return home if they wish,” and promised additional guidance would be forthcoming as soon as possible.
