"Suspicious device" exploded at Utah State prior to Turning Point event

Incident at Utah State University Amid Security Concerns

LOGAN, Utah — On Tuesday afternoon, “suspicious devices” detonated near Utah State University just before the first Turning Point USA event in the state following the assassination of Charlie Kirk. The local law enforcement had already heightened security in light of increased concerns.

According to a statement from the university, the device was found outside All-Domain, a campus building. It was classified as “non-explosive,” yet a bomb squad proceeded to detonate it. In a video shared by a news outlet, someone can be heard yelling “fire in the hole” just prior to the explosion.

A spokesperson mentioned, “A suspicious device was found near the outside of the old main. Local law enforcement and university officials were called to the scene. The device was detonated as a precaution, and the old main building is now clear and deemed safe.”

That evening, Utah State’s Turning Point USA Chapter was scheduled to host speakers including Alex Clark, Senator Mike Lee, Governor Spencer Cox, and Congressman Andy Biggs. Notably, this event marks the first TPUSA gathering in the state since the tragic event at Utah Valley University where Kirk was killed on September 10th.

The alleged assassin, Tyler Robinson, faces charges including aggravated murder and obstruction of justice, among other serious offenses.

In light of the recent incident, Utah State University indicated that the security protocols for the TPUSA event would resemble those of athletic events, emphasizing safety for attendees and speakers alike.

To ensure safety, the following security measures will be implemented at the TPUSA event:

  • Attendees will go through a magnetometer; individuals with firearms must have Utah concealed carry permits as required by state law.
  • Backpacks or bags larger than 6.5 x 4.5 inches will not be allowed. Only small wallet clutches are permitted.
  • No external signage is permitted.
  • Re-entry into the venue will not be allowed.

Utah State University reiterated their commitment to working with public safety partners to establish appropriate safety measures, addressing the heightened concerns within the community.
