Demands for Resignation After Incident Involving DHS Secretary
Representative Eric Swalwell (D-Calif) has called for the resignation of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Christa Noem following an incident where Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif) was forcibly removed and subsequently handcuffed during a press conference in Los Angeles.
“Christa Noem should step down after what occurred. This situation was completely unnecessary. We were assured that violent offenders would be deported, yet instead, U.S. citizens—including a senator—have been arrested,” Swalwell expressed, referring to Padilla’s detainment, which marks the second such incident in a short period.
“No one expected this chaos. It’s a mix of disorder, and her agents are behaving like they’re in an old Western. It’s not how things are done in America. She needs to come to Congress and explain herself,” Swalwell continued.
The Trump administration has responded critically to Swalwell’s remarks, with White House communications director Stephen Chen labeling his comments as “desperate whining” from someone dissatisfied with his role. The statement suggested that Swalwell is either out of touch or merely seeking attention.
During the Thursday press conference, Padilla attempted to question Noem directly but was interrupted by security personnel. He was forcefully pushed aside, pinned against the ground, and handcuffed, sparking outrage among Democrats in Congress, including Padilla’s colleague, Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif).
“He was exercising his rights as a U.S. Senator, and instead, he was treated like a criminal. This response from law enforcement is unacceptable,” Schiff stated, sharing his disappointment with the handling of the situation.
In response, the White House accused Padilla of staging a publicity stunt, stating that he embarrassed himself and his constituents with what they called an immature act. They also implied that Democrats seem more concerned about Padilla than about the challenges faced by law enforcement in the area.
“If this is how this administration treats senators who have questions, what does it mean for everyday workers and communities across California?” Padilla remarked later in the day.
Padilla further indicated that he was told multiple times to leave the area but did not comply, which led to the misunderstandings with security forces. DHS asserted that they considered him a potential threat based on the situation, yet acknowledged that Padilla and Noem did meet for 15 minutes afterward to discuss the events.
