Singing Along Amid Controversy
Sidney Sweeney seemed unfazed by the backlash surrounding her American Eagle ads during a karaoke night with her “Euphoria” co-star.
The “Anyone You” actress was spotted singing “What’s Up” alongside Hunter Schafer and Maud Apatow at Gaslight in Santa Monica, California. A video of the performance circulated online.
Schafer, 26, opted for a relaxed look in jeans and a tank top, while Sweeney and Apatow, 27, donned dresses.
Later, they were seen chatting with Jacob Elordi at a table in the karaoke venue. Their conversation appeared to be engaging, with Apatow covering her face at one point.
This outing comes amid controversy for Sweeney related to her partnership with American Eagle and her political affiliations. Just last week, the clothing brand and the Emmy nominee faced criticism for allegedly referencing “Nazi propaganda” through a play on words linking “Jane” and “jeans.”
In a commercial, Sweeney, recognized for her blue eyes and blonde hair, discussed how genes passed from parents influence traits like “hair color, personality, and eye color.”
American Eagle responded by stating, “We celebrate how everyone wears AE jeans with confidence. Great jeans look great on everyone.”
Following mockery from celebrities such as Doja Cat and Lizzo, the brand’s officials reiterated their support for self-expression through their jeans. Sweeney also faced scrutiny over her political registration; public records revealed she joined the Florida Republican Party in Monroe County back in June 2024.
In 2022, she had previously been criticized for hosting a MAGA-themed birthday celebration for her mother. In response, Sweeney claimed the event was simply an “innocent celebration” that was misinterpreted politically.
Despite the waves of criticism, Sweeney appeared composed as she made her way down the red carpet for the “Americana” premiere in Los Angeles.
