Sydney Sweeney Addresses Backlash Over American Eagle Ad Campaign

Sidney Sweeney’s Controversial Ad Campaign

Sidney Sweeney’s recent campaign with American Eagle stirred quite a debate among fans and critics, yet she seemed remarkably unphased by it all.

This was actually the first time she addressed the matter since the ad was unveiled. According to GQ, Sweeney mentioned that she didn’t get swept up in the surrounding chaos. The denim campaign played off the phrase “great genes,” which prompted some critics online to suggest it flirted with problematic notions of genetic superiority. Nonetheless, fashion brands continued to support it.

The stock price for American Eagle jumped by 38% following this ad, as reported by The New York Times. Sweeney acknowledged the numbers were notable, remarking, “We were aware of the numbers that were going on.”

She elaborated, saying, “When you read about declining foot traffic, it simply wasn’t accurate. All that was fabricated, but no one could really challenge that.” It seems there was a lot of chatter going on without substantial backing.

Mr. Sweeney reiterated their viewpoint, stating, “At the end of the day, I understood what that ad was about, and it was all about great jeans, so it didn’t really impact me.”

Sweeney confessed she was caught off guard by the reaction. “I put out an ad for jeans, and honestly, the response was a bit shocking. But, you know, jeans are my thing. I basically wear jeans and a T-shirt daily,” she shared with GQ.

The backlash even caught the attention of President Donald Trump, who defended the campaign, calling it “amazing.”

Sweeney found it surreal to hear figures like the president and Vice President J.D. Vance discussing the ad. Vance had humorously suggested political advice for Democrats during a podcast episode, saying, “My political advice to Democrats is to keep saying that anyone who finds Sidney Sweeney attractive is a Nazi.”

Despite the prevailing discourse, Sweeney kept herself busy with acting. She expressed feeling somewhat alienated from the noise surrounding the controversy. “I just decided to put my phone down. I was filming ‘Euphoria’ for long hours, so I didn’t pay much attention to it,” she recounted. Before this interview, she had been rather quiet on the subject of the ad and its ensuing criticism.
