Sydney Sweeney Transforms for ‘Christie’
Sydney Sweeney is making waves both in her new role and in personal health. The star of ‘Euphoria’ recently shared how she prepared for her part as boxing trailblazer Christy Martin in the upcoming film ‘Christie.’
To embody the character, Sweeney gained 35 pounds and trained intensely, mimicking the regimen of a professional fighter in her home state of Idaho. “It was quite the experience,” she reflected, mentioning how her family’s ties to the area made it special. “We actually turned my grandmother’s cabin into what I jokingly called my ‘Rocky’ gym.”
She described transforming the space by laying down flooring, installing a boxing bag, and collaborating with a boxing coach and a weight trainer. Her schedule was rigorous: weight training twice a day and boxing for two to three hours daily.
Sweeney acknowledged the physical challenges she faced, admitting, “I subsisted on protein shakes, and honestly, we had some rough moments on set.” She laughed about enduring real fights during filming that resulted in some bruises and bumps. “We didn’t hold back; we actually fought,” she noted, indicating the commitment to authenticity.
The actress found the emotional connection to Christy’s story compelling. “She was a trailblazer for women in boxing, thriving in a time when female athletes were often overlooked,” Sweeney explained. Tragically, Martin’s personal life was riddled with hardships, including a tumultuous marriage that exposed her to domestic abuse.
As both an actress and producer, Sweeney expressed her desire to highlight the narrative: “I want to share her journey, as she aimed to help others.” When she first spoke to the director via Zoom, her passion was clear: “I just knew I had to be involved.”
To add a unique twist to the filming experience, Martin herself visited the set. Sweeney recalled the excitement of having Martin cheer her on during boxing scenes, playfully mimicking Martin’s encouragement: “Get that left hook!”
Recently, Sweeney turned heads in Manhattan donning a striking outfit—a leather trench styled as a dress paired with matching boots and sunglasses. This bold fashion choice perfectly contrasted her character’s story, merging her current image with the grit of the boxing world.
While reminiscing about her rise to fame through ‘Euphoria,’ where she portrayed Cassie Howard, Sweeney teased about the series’ upcoming third season and its deeper spiritual themes, hinting, “Some characters will discover God, while others may be searching.”
