Sydney Sweeney Responds to American Eagle Jeans Ad Controversy

Actress Sydney Sweeney recently addressed the backlash surrounding a viral American Eagle jeans advertisement that stirred significant debate across political lines, even catching the attention of both former President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance.

The campaign featured the slogan “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans” and received criticism from some Democrats, who interpreted the phrase as promoting ideas of whiteness and eugenics by equating her “jeans” with her “genes.”

In a GQ interview aimed at promoting her latest film, “Christie,” Sweeney discussed the sensation her ad created and how it felt to have support from prominent political figures.

“The president and vice president talked about the jeans ad. What was that like?” the interviewer asked.

Sweeney described the experience as “surreal.” Trump expressed his support for her ad both on Truth Social and to reporters, even remarking, “Oh, I like her ads now,” after learning Sweeney is a registered Republican and plans to vote Republican in 2024.

Vance also commented, playfully suggesting Democrats should keep branding everyone who finds Sweeney attractive as a Nazi. He noted the absurdity in labeling a “normal beautiful girl in America” simply for participating in an ad campaign selling jeans.

Despite the uproar, Sweeney, who is recognized for her work in HBO’s “Euphoria” and “White Lotus,” faced considerable backlash over the summer regarding the campaign.

During her GQ conversation, she attempted to distance herself from the controversy, countering claims that the ads negatively impacted American Eagle’s sales. “We knew the numbers. So when you saw all the headlines about foot traffic declining at a certain rate, none of it was true,” she asserted.

Amid the political turbulence, she emphasized her desire to focus on her values rather than the noise around her. “I know who I am… I know I’m a kind person. I know I love a lot, and I know I’m excited to see what happens next,” Sweeney concluded, asserting that she chooses not to let others define her.
