Sydney Sweeney’s New Campaign Sparks Controversy
Sydney Sweeney is facing backlash over her latest collaboration with American Eagle, titled “Sydney Sweeney is Great Jeans.” Reactions have been mixed on social media—some users find the campaign “tone deaf,” suggesting it carries racial undertones, while others commend the actress for revitalizing classic advertising.
Interestingly, Sweeney isn’t shy about taking on nude scenes in her work.
In promotional videos shared on the brand’s Instagram, the “Euphoria” star approaches an American Eagle sign that initially reads “Sidney Sweeney has great genes.” She then humorously transposes “genes” to “jeans” before exiting the scene.
Critics have pointed out that the phrase “great genes” historically highlights traits associated with whiteness, which has prompted fans to voice their disappointment.
One Instagram user noted, “I’m totally deaf,” while another commented on the ad’s lack of representation and apparent insensitivity, especially in today’s climate. Some went so far as to liken the campaign to “Nazi propaganda.”
Despite the criticism, supporters of Sweeney and the brand have also emerged. One commenter insisted, “It won’t hurt anyone. It’s literally an ad for jeans.” Another defended the creativity, saying, “It’s cute and clever,” while yet another lamented the negativity surrounding the campaign.
Sweeney has been consistently engaged in various promotional efforts, including 3D billboards and interactive technology to showcase the “Sidney Jean,” which will see its net profits donated to Crisis Textline, offering mental health support.
While Sweeney and American Eagle have yet to respond to the ongoing debate, the conversation surrounding this campaign reflects broader societal tensions regarding representation and messaging in advertising.
