Excitement for Syosset Soccer Teams
It’s an exciting time to be playing soccer in Syosset.
This Sunday, both the boys’ and girls’ teams are heading to the county finals. The girls will face Oceanside, last year’s champions, who had been the top seed until their 6-0 semifinal win against Port Washington.
Syosset secured their spot after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Massapequa in overtime.
Tyler Arnone, the head coach of the girls’ team, shared that, “The girls really came together as a group and created a team-first mentality.” He noted that this approach helped them navigate various challenges this season, including injuries and competing in a tough conference, which hadn’t always yielded the desired results.
Arnone also mentioned a shared energy between the boys’ and girls’ teams; he observed that the boys supported the girls during their semifinal match, adding, “It’s a great situation we’re in right now.”
On the south coast, Daniel Kierra, coach of Oceanside, emphasized how serious her team is about defending their title. “They take a lot of pride in being the No. 1 seed going into the tournament,” she said, indicating her players are eager to repeat their success from the previous season.
Kierra did express some concern, noting the challenge posed by graduating 11 seniors, six of whom were newcomers. “We knew that this success had to come from the girls,” she stated. “They really had the mindset that last year was not a fluke.”
Both coaches acknowledged their teams’ determination and heart. Arnone remarked about Syosset’s players: “This team in particular plays with a lot of spirit. They have a lot of belief in what they’re trying to achieve.”
