Syria detains suspects following church attack in Damascus that resulted in 25 deaths.

Syrian authorities have announced multiple arrests tied to a devastating suicide bombing that killed at least 25 people at a Greek Orthodox church on Sunday. The Home Office highlighted the apprehension of several individuals deemed “criminals involved in the attack.” Home Minister Anas Hattab mentioned that this operation targeted a site connected to cells associated with the Islamic State terrorist group.

During a security operation near Damascus, investigators also found explosive devices and motorcycles linked to these extremist groups. Just hours after the attack, President Ahmed al-Sharaa vowed to bring to justice all those involved in this “heinous crime.”

The tragedy occurred at Maríaes Church in Dvaiyur, where worshippers were attacked as they prayed. Witnesses report that the assailant first opened fire before detonating himself, leading to significant casualties, with 63 others also injured.

While no group claimed responsibility immediately, a Syrian Home Affairs spokesman suggested that ISIS is likely behind the attack following initial investigations. He emphasized that “the safety of places of worship is a red line,” condemning ISIS and hinting at the broader implications for stability in Syria.

Al-Sharaa reflected on the importance of unity in the face of such threats, noting that the attack underscores the need for solidarity in securing the community’s safety. This bombing incident comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East, particularly after recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and Israel’s attacks in the region.
