General Jack Keene Warns of China’s Ambitions on Taiwan
General Jack Keene, a prominent strategic analyst, raised alarms regarding China’s intentions towards Taiwan, hinting they could escalate within the next five years. He expressed concerns over the U.S. military being stretched too thin due to commitments in Europe and the Middle East. In his assessment, Keene detailed China’s military advantages and ongoing technological advancements that could affect Taiwan.
On a related note, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-de expressed gratitude towards the United States for its backing, asserting Taiwan’s determination against China’s plans. He articulated a firm stance on independence, accusing China of inciting regional instability and undermining peace.
“Despite any pressure, Taiwan will uphold its national sovereignty and democratic way of life,” the president stated in a recent Facebook post, adding, “Taiwan will never be sacrificed or traded.”
Lai’s remarks followed a summit between President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping that intensified worries over a potential invasion of Taiwan.
Trump has conveyed that Taiwan should not expect unconditional military support. He, however, acknowledged the importance of Taiwan’s long-term security partnerships and arms dealings, linking them to the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, which facilitates arms sales.
In December, the Trump administration approved a significant arms sale to Taiwan, reported as the largest to date, though further sales are still awaiting approval.
Lai’s Five-Point Stance on Taiwan
President Lai articulated a five-point message addressing Taiwan’s defense against Chinese claims:
- “Taiwan is a defender of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”
- “China is the root cause of regional instability.”
- “Protecting the Republic of China does not equate to seeking ‘Taiwan independence.’
- “U.S.-Taiwan security cooperation is critical for regional peace.”
- “Peace across the Taiwan Strait is a core interest that must not be sacrificed.”
While there were no immediate responses from China or the White House, Trump has stated he is considering Xi’s views on Taiwan without pledging to intervene should China take aggressive actions.
“We value President Trump’s support for peace and stability in the region, marked by enhanced U.S. arms sales to Taiwan that have bolstered its defensive capabilities,” Lai noted.
He also emphasized that maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait aligns with the interests of the U.S. and global democracies. “Taiwan will persist in enhancing its self-defense, upholding democracy and freedom, and contributing positively to regional stability,” he concluded.
