Taiwo Awoniyi has emergency surgery for a severe abdominal injury.

On Sunday, the Nottingham Forest striker underwent surgery after sustaining serious abdominal injuries during a match against Leicester. This occurred in a tense environment as the two teams ended in a 2-2 draw at the City Ground.

Awoniyi, the Nigerian international, collided with an opponent, necessitating immediate surgical intervention. Thankfully, the injury is said to be non-life-threatening.

Although he attempted to continue playing after some treatment, medical staff later assessed the severity of his condition. This incident raised frustrations for Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, who confronted manager Nuno Espirito Santo after the game. Awoniyi returned to the pitch but struggled to perform as the team sought an important goal for their Champions League aspirations, and Marinakis expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of a substitution.

Adding to the unfortunate circumstances, Awoniyi’s collision with Leicester midfielder Fakundo Buonanott followed a controversial play where Anthony Elanga appeared to be offside but continued towards goal, which resulted in both players crashing into the posts.

It was a tough day for Forest, impacting their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. Winning their final two matches, including a significant clash with Chelsea, may not suffice unless rivals like Aston Villa, Manchester City, or Newcastle drop points.

On a brighter note, Forest is assured of at least a spot in the conference league, continuing their presence in European football since the 1995-96 season.
