James Talarico Acknowledges Missteps on Cultural Issues

In a recent interview, Texas Congressman James Talarico candidly admitted that he had “missed the mark” with some of his past statements on sensitive cultural topics, including a previous declaration about God being “non-dualistic.”

Talarico, who recently won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, responded to questions about contentious remarks made by his opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, during an interview on Wednesday.

“There are definitely some things I said that I regret. Some comments were off the mark, and I’ll be the first to admit that. However, Ken Paxton is intentionally cutting out my unpleasant comments to distract from his history of corruption,” Talarico stated shortly after Paxton’s victory over Sen. John Cornyn in the Republican primary runoff.

Paxton has been using past comments from Talarico’s tenure as a state representative in his campaign advertisements. One such ad emphasized Talarico’s views on transgender rights and immigration, branding him with the slogan, “Radical Talarico: Too Low for Texas,” suggesting diminished masculinity.

In 2021, during a debate about a bill aimed at transgender athletes, Talarico remarked, “modern science recognizes that there are far more than two biological sexes. There are actually six.” This comment drew criticism, including condemnation from Trump. In his recent victory speech, Paxton referred to Talarico by nicknames such as “Six Gender Jimmy” and “James Tallafrico” in light of these remarks.

During the interview, CBS News’ Ed O’Keefe asked Talarico to clarify his prior statement: “In 2021, you said, ‘God is non-binary.’ What did you mean by that?”

Talarico replied, “That statement was intentionally provocative. It means that God cannot be confined to human categories. Paul the apostle notes in his letter to the Galatians that there is no male or female in Christ.”

Talarico seems to refer to Galatians 3:28 from the New International Version, which states, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

O’Keeffe further prompted, “Do you still believe there are six biological sexes?”

Talarico answered, “I know that there are two genders, male and female. But I also recognize that there are a very small number of individuals with chromosomal abnormalities, and I think they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.”
