Some San Francisco Bay Area donors to President Joe Biden are urging Democrats to support the president and conveying the message to voters that they are electing “a team, not one person.”
After Thursday night’s dismal performance in the debate, in which Biden displayed his age and lack of intelligence while President Donald Trump knew the talking points, pressure is growing for Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race – and indeed from the presidency altogether.
But Biden’s campaign insists nothing has changed in the race. San Francisco Chronicle NoteSome donors are urging the Democratic “bedwetting party” to change its messaging to focus on Biden’s “team.”
“There will be a push over the next month for Biden to nominate a new candidate at the convention,” said Joe Cotchett, a prominent Burlingame lawyer and Democratic fundraiser. Biden joked: Atherton is known for his fundraising “for 217 years.” “That was the case last year. I don’t think that’s going to happen. I think people are going to come together.”
He expects Biden supporters to start talking about electing “a team, not one person,” as Biden’s team did versus Trump when he won the Republican nomination in 2016. “Only I can solve that.”
In contrast, Cotchett said picking Biden’s team “will be the focus, and that’s what we have to explain to the American people.”
Confidence in the Biden “team” was shaken after the failed Afghanistan withdrawal in late summer 2021. Still, the message is likely to appeal to party insiders who are benefiting from a Biden presidency.
