Target Apologizes for Controversial Halloween Costume

Target has issued an apology regarding a Halloween costume that drew criticism for allegedly resembling Blackface and harking back to 19th-century minstrel performances. This came after a wave of backlash on social media.

The costume, marketed as the “Kids’ Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume,” was sold under Target’s seasonal Hyde and EEK Boutique brand and has since been removed from the listings.

The company acknowledged that it was wrong to feature such an item, with spokesperson Brian Harper-Tibaldo stating, “As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry. The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment. It is no longer available for sale.”

Harper-Tibaldo continued, highlighting the hurt it may have caused, particularly to Black customers and team members. He indicated that the removal of the costume is just the first step in addressing the issue, and the company is examining how this oversight occurred to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The decision to pull the costume followed significant social media backlash, in which critics accused the Minneapolis-based retailer of perpetuating racist stereotypes.

One social media user expressed disappointment, questioning why there seemed to be a lack of oversight in the company’s decision-making: “You really don’t have anyone left in Minneapolis to say, ‘Hey, that’s racist’? Y’all cut DEI and now you’ve got a minstrel clown costume for kids on your website.”

This incident occurs amid a series of public relations challenges for Target, including controversies surrounding its Pride Collection in 2023 and a rollback of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives after the return of former President Donald Trump to the White House.

Moreover, there has been a notable shift in Target’s approach to corporate responsibility, particularly concerning diversity efforts. The retailer had previously focused on increasing representation of Black employees and supporting Black-owned businesses but scaled back these initiatives, citing a need to align with “the evolving external landscape.” This shift has unfortunately met with backlash from some Black consumers and business leaders who had previously supported Target’s diversity initiatives.
