Target to Only Sell Pride Month Collection at Select Stores Following 2023 Backlash

Following backlash and boycotts last year, Target announced that only select stores will carry its Pride Month collection this June.

In a statement posted on its website Thursday, the company said that instead of rolling out the Pride Month collection in all its stores, it will offer “a selection of products including adult apparel, housewares, food and beverages, hand-picked based on consumer needs. We will offer a collection of feedback. The collection will be available at Target.com and select stores based on past sales. ”

Target also announced other plans for Pride Month, including attending local Pride events in Minneapolis, where the organization is headquartered, and around the country. ABC News report.

“In addition to our own teams, we continue to support many LGBTQIA+ organizations by participating in local Pride events in Minneapolis and across the country,” a company spokesperson said in a statement obtained by ABC News on Friday. I’m going,” he said. “Additionally, we will offer a product collection for Pride, including adult apparel, home goods, food and beverages, hand-picked based on guest insights and consumer research. These items start at $3 and include select available at his stores and on Target.com.

During Pride season last summer, Target faced backlash and boycotts for promoting LGBTQIA+ products in all of its stores.

“For more than a decade, Target has offered a variety of products designed to celebrate Pride Month,” Target said in May 2023 in response to the criticism. “Since launching this year’s collection, we have experienced threats that have affected our team members’ sense of safety and well-being at work. We are making adjustments to our plans, including removing the items at the center of the act. Our focus now is to continue our commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community and stand with them during Pride Month and throughout the year. .”

Although fewer Pride Month products will be sold in retail stores this year, Target will continue to support LGBTQIA+ organizations throughout the year, including the Human Rights Campaign, Family Equality, and more. The company will also highlight LGBTQ-owned brands in stores and online during Pride Month and throughout the year.

“Target is committed to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community during Pride Month and throughout the year. Most importantly, we welcome our LGBTQIA+ team members, who reflect our culture of care for the more than 400,000 employees who work at Target. “We want to create a supportive environment,” a company spokesperson told ABC News on Friday. “We have long provided benefits and resources to our community and will have internal programs to celebrate Pride 2024.” ” he said.
