Daily Caller Softball Team Advances in Playoffs
Last week, the Daily Caller’s Universe Softball Team triumphed over the Mighty Commerce Department in the quarterfinals of the think tank softball league playoffs, with a final score of 16-9.
This match marked the first encounter between the two teams since the notable 2022 TTSL Championship Game. In a game that had remained closely contested for much of the time, the Caller pulled away with a strong offensive performance in the sixth inning.
The Commerce Department ended the regular season in the greenback division with a 5-1 record, suffering their only loss to the Federal Energy Regulation Commission. They had previously won their playoff opener against the International Election Foundation, securing a 13-11 victory before facing the undefeated Daily Caller.
The game started off tightly, with both teams trading runs during the first three innings, with the Caller leading 6-5 after three. The Caller’s early runs came from a leadoff single by Scrave Marshallworth and a double from travel salesman Jake Barbe, along with one run scored by visiting sports fellow Will Mutola. The bottom of the lineup contributed as well, with three consecutive singles from editor-in-chief Dylan Hausman and senior editor Amber Duke, plus Jonah Went’s further runs boosted by a pinch runner, Lucas Alonso.
The excitement escalated in the third inning when Hybrid Sales Congressman Josh hit one of his two home runs, bringing in three more runs for the Caller.
In addition, Manfred Went caught fire with his bat, finishing the game with three hits, including two doubles and a triple while playing solid defense at first base.
As the game progressed, both teams continued to exchange hits, highlighted by a clutch home run from Berube along the left field line by Breccan Thies. The Caller entered the sixth inning with a 10-7 lead, but Commerce managed to tacked on two runs at the top of the inning.
In response, the Caller scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth, anchored by a triple from Josh Homan and another hit from Went, effectively sealing the game before the defense shut down in the top of the seventh inning.
Now, the Caller advances to the final four, where they will face a familiar opponent, the American First Policy Institute. Fans might recall that the Caller beat the AFPI earlier this season in a tight 10-9 match, hinting that this upcoming game promises to be quite exciting.
