Tarik Skubal’s Possible Return Sparks Hope for Tigers Fans
Tigers supporters are feeling a spark of hope as injured pitcher Tarik Skubal may make a comeback next week.
The reigning American League Cy Young Award winner completed a bullpen session on Thursday, marking the third day of his rehabilitation process. This has fueled rumors about an earlier-than-expected return from his elbow surgery.
However, Skubal was quick to dismiss any speculation.
“If you’re not in that conversation, I wouldn’t trust anything you see,” he stated. “Sure, I want to be back as soon as I can. But right now, it’s unprecedented territory. You really can’t look back at game history to determine if surgery was performed 15 days ago or not. I’m basically pitching one inning with a hypothetical start.”
He also acknowledged the urgency, yet emphasized caution. “I get it. I want to return quickly, but I need to be healthy too. Rushing back doesn’t make sense if it puts me back on the shelf. It really comes down to how I’m feeling each day and how I recover. Tomorrow, it’s all about how I wake up and assess my condition.”
The surgery, performed on May 6, was a non-invasive procedure aimed at removing a loose body from his left elbow; recovery expectations are roughly two to three months. Skubal’s progress appears promising, with his bullpen sessions offering fans a glimmer of hope for his early return.
One factor in his rapid recovery might be the innovative Nanoneedle Scope 2.0 procedure, which utilizes tiny needles to minimize scarring and inflammation, conducted by Dr. Neil El-Atrache.
“This is akin to receiving a shot,” commented his agent, Scott Boras, during an appearance on the “Baseball Tonight” podcast. “The rehabilitation period will be significantly reduced.”
So far this season, Skubal has appeared in seven games, achieving a record of three wins and two losses, with an ERA of 2.70. The Tigers are eager to welcome back his talent as they struggle in the AL Central Division, sitting ten games below .500, which has been a disappointing start for a team expecting to contend for the playoffs.
Currently, there is no official timeline for his return.
“There are a few hurdles to navigate after surgery,” said manager AJ Hinch on Thursday. “While I mentioned it was easy, it still requires strategic steps.”
