Surprising College Football Upset
In a notable twist during the college football season, Tarleton State from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) triumphed over Army with a close score of 30-27 on Friday night.
The game shifted dramatically when Brad Larson, a kicker for the Texans, scored a 37-yard field goal on his second attempt during overtime, marking a significant victory for Tarleton State. This win also marks only the second time the school has triumphed against Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams.
Tarleton State’s head coach, Todd Witten, expressed immense pride in his team, stating, “Our peers have given us all their hearts. I’m not sure I can even express how proud I am of these guys. They’re just incredible. Our coaching staff laid out a solid game plan, and it really paid off. This is a monumental win for our program.”
He went on to reflect on past performances against Army, highlighting their impressive record from the previous year, where they held a 12-2 standing. “We’ve struggled against larger programs in recent years. Army is a strong team, so this win is really significant for all of us,” Witten added.
Unfortunately for Army, they faced setbacks as their quarterback DeWayne Coleman had to leave the game with just 57 seconds left on the clock. Backup Cale Hellums stepped in but couldn’t secure the win as Dawson Jones missed a field goal that would have clinched the game.
In overtime, both teams attempted to secure points with field goals. The Texans’ quarterback, Victor Gavallis, completed 16 of 30 passes, totaling 152 yards and one touchdown. Meanwhile, running backs Caleb Lewis and Tre Page III each contributed a rushing touchdown. Lewis managed to rack up an impressive 107 rushing yards while Page added another 89 yards.
Coleman, leading for Army, gained 100 rushing yards and had two interceptions, along with 129 passing yards. It was a tough game for both teams, showcasing resilience and competitive spirit on the field.
