Salem, Oregon (Katu) – When the clock collides in the middle of the night on April 15th, taxpayers remind us today that they have marked a deadline for filing state and federal personal income tax returns for the 2024 tax year.
The Oregon Department of Revenue is urging people who have not yet submitted to utilize the tools available to facilitate the process.
The division has processed 1.7 million of its expected 2.2 million returns and as of April 14, it has issued 1.1 million refunds.
New this year, taxpayers can directly submit federal returns using the IRS IRS Direct File And their Oregon goes through Direct file Oregon Free.
According to the department, taxpayers using both services complete their Oregon returns in about 17 minutes, with feedback on average of 5.5 out of 4.5.
However, the IRS Direct File does not support all return types, including those with dividends reported on Form 1099-DIV and capital gains or losses.
For those who have not submitted, electronic applications continue to be the fastest way to get a refund.
The Reverue website provides free tax preparation software and information about your organization that offers free or reduced assistance. Direct File Public Computer Kiosks for filing taxes in Oregon are available at regional offices throughout the state.
Taxpayers can use the upgraded one to check their refund status.”Where can I find my refund?“Currently, a tool that provides additional details and features. To access these extensions, taxpayers must sign a revenue online account.
For those submitting paper returns, make sure you’re mailing today or use the various Revenue Bureau dropboxes. Staff will accept returns and stamp them at Salem Headquarters until 5pm.
Extensions can be filed directly with the Oregon Department of Revenue or the IRS to move the deadline to October 15th, 2025.
An extension to the file is not an extension to pay taxes, so taxpayers must pay what they can to avoid penalties.
Additionally, today is the estimated payment date for the first quarter of the 2025 tax year. Taxpayers can make payments online or mail them separately from other communications.
